AMD’s big annoucement

October 7, 2008

Now some of you may have heard AMD’s big annoucement and for those of you that haven’t I will explain:

AMD is shutting down their manufactering division to cut costs due to the recent losses in the market to Intel over the last few years. So they decided to create a new company and infuse $6 billion over five years into it.  The Foundry Company will also assume approximately $1.2 billion of AMD’s existing debt. AMD will first infuse $1.2 billion. This effectively means that AMD is not as powerful as they used to be and don’t have much left in them.

While consumers scramble in search of the elusive Wii, is Nintendo already providing glimpses into the console’s successor?

According to a blog post at What They Play, Nintendo is showing early presentations of its future console poised to arrive in 2011.  Citing industry sources, What They Play reports the device, dubbed “Wii HD”, will include high-definition graphics and an emphasis on digitally-distributed content.

Nintendo won’t remark on the claims, telling the site they don’t “comment on speculation or rumor.”

This follows a report over the weekend from a Japanese site claiming Nintendo will introduce a new version of DS before year’s end.  The revamped handheld would reportedly include a built-in camera, music player, and improved wireless functionality.

The answers to these rumors could arrive tomorrow, when Nintendo holds its fall media summit in San Francisco.  In the meantime, readers, what features would you like to see in a redesigned Wii or DS?

A new Wii?? That would be cool but Nintendo should do something about current Wii owners that don’t have HD. What do you guys think?

Is the future blu or is it just disc based?

September 30, 2008

“The Future is Blu or I should say Disc based”

For those of you that believe that Downloads are the next generation…as that may be true it’s going to be a while before that so happens.

1.) HD takes up a lot of space

2.) Download will take a while for a full HD movie

3.) Hard Drives

4.) DVD and Blu-ray similarities

Remember that DVDs started at a high price and it wasn’t until the players dropped below $150 before people started to buy DVD. Now having said that, DVD and Blu-ray can exist harmoniously, HD owners get Blu and non-HD use DVD.  So it took a few years for DVD players to drop down in price before people bought them and some people thought that DVD would die because VHS was good enough. Now for some Upconversion DVD players will work fine, but for those who want to see true HD will buy a Blu-Ray player. It will be another 2 years before adoption becomes more wide. For HD downloads, a full HD movie would be around 25GB and on a DSL connection will take hours, so until connection speeds increase and people have bigger Hard Drives, this won’t happen and with existing DVRs most people won’t be able to keep movies on their DVRs for very long because if they get movies in HD then they will record shows in HD and that will take up an enormeous amount of space. I for one like having a disc because as a movie lover I like having films on a disc that I can take with me anywhere and if I go to a friend’s house I won’t be able to burn it on a DVD I would have to use a BD-R. So in short we are another 5-10 years away from HD downloads if it all because I like to have the disc that I can take anywhere or anywhere in my house and watch. So the two formats can exist and HD downloads are years off if they ever do come.  So you decide on the future.

Firefox 3.0.3, two days after 3.0.2 and Sony BDP-S350 update pulled

September 27, 2008

Looks like the BDP-S350 update has been pulled, there is no reason yet but it is prolly due to technical issues that people were having with the update…although the update worked for me, obvisuly for some people it didn’t work. More details as I get them.

Also for those who d/l and installed Firefox 3.0.2 and had problems with it 3.0.3 is now out and fixes that issue. Apparently 3.0.3 fixes a problem with 3.0.2 where users were unable to retrieve saved passwords or save new passwords

Blu-ray player update

September 26, 2008

So last night I download and installed the BDP-S350 firmware update……..in addition to improving Java BD compatibliity and BD-live stuff, they added the function for the Blu-ray player to be in a standby mode…so it would never have to fully shut off and you wouldn’t have to wait for it to come back on, although the notice does warn it uses more electricity and the fan will be in use at times when in standby, so you can choose either the normal startup or a Quick Start.  There have been little changes here and there though with the player’s main menu some icons are different, in system settings it has added whether or not you want the player to automatically connect to the internet for BD-live content, which is cool. It took 15 minutes to install and I can tell some of the improvements. So if you have a BDP-S350, go and download.

BDP-S350 Firmware update…and new Macs….and The Simpsons Season 20 starts sunday

September 25, 2008

So I bought my Blu-ray player, the S350 back in August, and now a firmware update is out. It’s supposed to add BD-Live capability and improve BD Java-compatibility. So I get to apply this update tonight….my first one. I know I am weird but I get to do it, finally. So I hope it all goes well. More later on this.

The next thing, rumor has it that Apple IS in fact going to refresh their macs this year. All Mac Authorized resellers have been told to make way for these new machines and as always Apple will demo them and I can’t wait…maybe one model will carry the Blu-ray drive or a BD-R drive. But we can’t help but wonder because of the next Mac OS X update…10.5.6 carrying Blu-ray support. So we will have to wait and see.
